>Vote

November 4, 2008

>

Duh.

Bessemer Opinions readers are informed and engaged, and by my polling narrowly support Barack Obama. So I urge you to all vote, and to call at least 5 people and make sure they have voted. Make it 10 people. Let’s have a historic turnout in Alabama.

We voted absentee last week, and this week we are here:

Yesterday we went to a Las Vegas rally where Michelle Obama spoke. Afterward she worked the crowd. People were really excited, and Michelle seemed to be truly enjoying herself. Her message was clear. Barack’s experience working in the poor neighborhoods of Illinois increases his understanding of what Americans are going through. He and she had student loans like so many young people that they paid off not to long ago. They are regular Americans, “Joe Americans,” I like to say.

After Michelle spoke she greeted the crowd.

Before the event we waited in line for a couple of hours. This guy pulled us aside and asked if we would stand on the riser behind the speaker. Of course we said yes. I mean…

Obama may not take Alabama, but I feel confident he will take Nevada. These folks are really well organized. But that is true of Obama’s campaign across the country, including Bessemer.

Now, go vote. Make history. Enjoy.

>Convention Day 1

August 26, 2008

>Delegates to the Democratic National Convention are diverse. About 3% of the delegates are Native American. 5% are Asian and Pacific Islanders. 6% are Gay or Lesbian. 24 % are African American. >50% are Women. 100% are Patriotic Americans.

John Legend sang. Will the boss? Rumor has it.

Ted Kennedy was wonderful. His doctor and his wife advised him not to go, and even after arriving in Denver, it was not clear that he would be able to speak.

But his address was vintage Kennedy. And he pledged to be there in January and to work with Obama on Universal Health care.

Michelle Obama, a woman full of compassion, which she got from her father, was introduced by her brother Craig Robinson, who happens to be head basketball coach at Oregon State.

And to carry the basketball analogy that Craig used in describing Barack a step further, Michelle Obama hit a 3 pointer from the half court line with her speech.

As she said, when Barack Obama is elected, our children will be able to say, “This time, we listened to our hopes instead of our fears.”

Watch her speech here.

If Michelle Obama’s job was to make Americans realize that all of us are alike, it worked.

As she spoke of her family, I thought of my mother and what I learned from her, my father and what he taught us, my kids and what I have taught them, my brothers and how we grew up.

My family, like her family, had obstacles and we overcame them.

It is the great American story.

Michelle Obama will make a great first lady.

While the Bush economy is falling through the cracks (Stocks tumble) it is a banner day for democrats and gay rights.

Start with the democrats. Obama and Clinton appeared together in Unity, New Hampshire today. From CNN,

“We may have started on separate paths … today our hearts are set on the same destination for America … to elect Barack Obama as the next president of the United States,” Clinton said.
“We are one party, we are one America.”

As for GLBT equality, yesterday for the first time in the history of our country a hearing was held on transgender issues Advocate article
“For far too long, transgender people have lived with the fear of losing their job simply because of who they are,” said Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund. “Today’s hearing marks a critical step in addressing this travesty once and for all.”

Let’s hope this leads to an inclusive ENDA (Employment Non Discrimination Act) .

And also, today Michelle Obama spoke before the Democratic National Committee’s Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council.

From the article: ”We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union,” she said at the event, held days before the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots between gays and New York police, and the city’s annual gay pride parade.

Chris sent me this picture of her two good friends at their civil ceremony in Thurso. Wonderful people she says, I hope we get to meet them when we travel to Scotland. No, Chris, we don’t have travel plans yet, just wishes.

Congratulations, guys!!!
