>Things Happening this Fourth of July Weekend

July 3, 2009

>Tomorrow the crown of the Statue of Liberty will re-open and visitors will be able to climb the steps and peer out over the harbor again. Tickets are sold out through November, they say.

I guess we will have to return. After November.

News from the sports world:

Venus Williams and her sister Serena Williams will meet tomorrow in the Wimbledon final. It’s a rematch of last year’s final which Venus won.

They are like John Archibald (who said in his column yesterday that he doesn’t vote) in that they do not vote (I am 100% sure its for differing reasons).

ORLANDO — Karl Marx said ‘Religion is the opiate of the masses.’
Well, I’m going to take it a step further and say, ‘Religion is the opiate of them asses.’
I refer, in this particular case, to the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. Recently when questioned about the significance of the Obama candidacy, these ladies emphatically said they would not vote because their religion strictly forbids any involvement in politics and political activity…
article in Black Athlete by Wendell Simpson.

In that case, they can never complain about the conditions in our country. And neither, I guess, should Archibald complain about our city. Oh, but that’s how he makes a living. Anyway, VOTE, John.

But the sisters, they play great tennis. I think Venus will win.

Also from the sports world:

Michael Phelps’ Subway ad starts this weekend. This is not it. But it’s Subway.

See (David), people in our country get a second chance. We are a forgiving people, that’s what we learned from the Bible. Not that Michael Phelps’ inhaling was such a big deal. I mean, shouldn’t marijuana be legalized?

Have a safe Fourth of July. Eat lots of ribs and enjoy the fireworks at Roosevelt Park in Bessemer.

>Michael Phelps and Jeff Sessions

February 2, 2009

>What do Michael Phelps and Jeff Sessions have in common?

Michael Phelps took a hit and now he’s taking a hit. Maybe we should just charge this off as youthful indiscretion. I mean, the guys 23 years old. Who, by that age, has not taken a hit off a bong? You don’t have to answer.

Now we really will remember Michael for his stellar performance at the 2008 Olympics and, well, his human beauty. I mean, just watch. The music, coincidentally, is Contagious (key phrase, “You make me feel so high”) by Avril Lavigne.

Jeff Sessions, on the other hand is much older. He doesn’t have the excuse of being youthful as a reason for making a stupid statement. And I am pretty sure he has been doing it since his 20’s.

Anyway, he said, in referring to the New Deal, “It didn’t work. Unemployment was as high after they started all these make-work programs as it was before. Now people liked it, and they felt Roosevelt had done something, but the long-term bitter fruit of it was not so good.”

Check your facts, Jeff. Unemployment dropped from 24% to about 14% between 1933 and 1940. I don’t think the families of those who went from having an unemployed provider to an employed provider would consider that “bitter fruit.”

So, which long-term bitter fruit is he referring to?

TVA? this still exists, making it “long-term.” My power comes from TVA, as does a lot of people’s in North Alabama. Nothing bitter there.

WPA, PWA and CWA? Well the agencies are not still around, but the infrastructure projects that were completed while providing jobs to millions are still around. Many of those projects need repair, like bridges and such, but the bitter fruit is that Sessions and other Republicans won’t vote for it.

FDIC? Still around. As banks are folding people who have deposits in them might appreciate the FDIC.

Social Security Act? First payments were in 1942, but the Agency was created in 1933. I know a lot of people who depend on their social security check to survive. I doubt they are bitter about that.

Fair Labor Standards Act. Still around. gives us the 40 hour work week.

So, what do Michael Phelps and Jeff Sessions have in common? Nothing, but give me any excuse to feature Michael Phelps on this blog and you will see him here. Maybe the same could be said for any opportunity to point out the stupidity of Jeff Sessions.

>What We Learned Last Night

September 14, 2008

>1. Barack Obama knows when it is the right time and the wrong time to do a comedy show. “In light of the unfolding crisis in Texas, Senator Obama has decided it is no longer appropriate to appear on Saturday Night Live,” the campaign said in a statement.

2. Michael Phelps can not act. So bad, that I will not even post video. But…he can still swim I am sure, and is still pleasing to look at.

3. Tina Fey does a great Sarah Palin.

>Local Obama News and Saturday Night Live

September 13, 2008

>News for area Barack Obama supporters, Alabama Barack Team Bessemer has a new web site where you can keep up with meetings, news, visit the store to see what’s available and more.

Let me just say that this is why Barack is going to win. His campaign has gone into communities across the nation and set up offices, and he has a huge grass roots campaign effort. Of course I am realistic. McCain has a big lead in Alabama and that might be hard to overcome. But in other states this will make the difference. Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, for instance.

If you can’t stay up…or won’t be in yet…set your Tivo or DVR for Saturday Night Live tonight. Hot “celebrities,” with Michael Phelps hosting and Barack Obama appearing. Two of my favorite guys.

Michael Phelps is hosting.

From ETonline :

The buzz for the “Saturday Night Live” season premiere this weekend just got a lot bigger! Not only is Olympic champ Michael Phelps hosting, but Barack Obama is slated to make a guest appearance.

People magazine says that Obama will fly in from New Hampshire to be “live from New York,” but the extent of his on-air involvement is not yet known.

“The details of the sketch are still being worked out,” Obama’s campaign tells the mag.

The Democratic presidential hopeful previously appeared on “SNL” during the primary in sketch where Amy Poehler played Hillary Clinton.

Let’s see, watch the Auburn game, the news and then SNL.
