>Prodigal Sons and A/X ads

February 12, 2010

>Today begins the Great Backyard Bird Count. Get out your checklists. birds are easy to spot in the snow. Oh wait. Misled again, it seems. Maybe we’ll still see some. But we know we will see birds.

You can count birds today, tomorrow, Sunday, and/or Monday.

Prodigal Sons

Well Oprah was not off base, the show yesterday featured the former high school quarterback standout Paul McKerrow, who is now Kimberly Reed, and is indeed a lesbian, and in a relationship with her partner Claire.

Kimberly has produced a documentary, described as “Superb” (San Francisco Chronicle), “Jaw dropping” (The Independent), “Exceptional” (the Village Voice), “Amazing” (Variety), about her and her brother, called Prodigal Sons.

Here she is in an interview taped during the 2009 Florida Film Festival about the movie.

Prodigal Sons is not yet scheduled for viewing here, but there are screenings in Atlanta and other cities. Dates can be found on the web site.

A/X and Valentines Day

Valentine’s Day is this weekend, and advertisers are trying to target the LGBT market, it seems.

I have a few comments about the Armani Exchange ad, which appears as a 10 foot poster in the window of their stores.

1. Nobody I know is celebrating Valentine’s Day with anyone who looks like any of these people.

2. We’ve seen more skin and sex than this in many hetero ads for clothing, perfume and beer. Abercrombie, Marky Mark…to name a couple.

3. A mother’s support group is claiming the ads “poison children with 10 foot posters that are nothing but soft porn.” No, not teaching your children about the diversity of humanity is poisoning them with bigotry and in some cases, hatred.

4. One of the comments about this poster at the link above: “Posters like the AX ones are needed, to help us remember that people are not made of society – society is made of people. And people, in all their combinations, must come first.”

>Seen around Bessemer

October 8, 2009

>The modern day McCarthiest is still after me but I don’t have time to fool with the fool today. It’s a busy day, here are some pictures taken around Bessemer Wednesday, and a fun video.

Lots of these buttons around. With the Birmingham elections over (congratulations Johnathan Austin)this runoff for district 56 is all that’s left to watch. In the unofficial unscientific Bessemer Opinions poll, Mitchell is winning hands down. Expect a low turnout and a win by Mitchell when the runoff occurs in November.

The building I mentioned the other day is still being torn down, I didn’t think it would take this long. I have since learned the history of the building (thanks, you know who you are). The White Hardware Building was built in 1940 and originally housed Hill Grocery. It later housed Western Auto and White’s True Value Hardware.

I also got word that the burned out building I pictured the other day at 20th and 4th will begin to come down in a day or two.

This is the intermodal facility in Bessemer. The one that was developed and built with no controversy.

Bessemer is not all urban and industrial. We have a bit of rurality (?) too. This old grocery sits on the outskirts of town. You probably have seen it. It appears to straddle a creek. Interesting.

This video is great. A fun weekend for gays is coming up. So for fun, watch John, Jeffrey, Adam, Chris, the other Chris and Brian in Asbury Park during Labor Day 2009. Oh, and Whitney. You ladies can enjoy this too, but sorry… Thanks, guys. $ Million Dollar Bill $

Men on a Mission (and Women, Too)

September 14, 2007

Mormons are not all cut from the same mold, as this calendar shows us. These guys have returned from the mission field, and are now baring their chests for charity. The money goes to 12 charities picked by each of the men, to help the areas they did missionary work in. Mormons Exposed See a video preview of the calendar here. Youtube

I tell you what…I might not ignore the doorbell if I looked out and saw these guys getting off their bicycles.

Wonder what Mitt thinks of this?

Brings to mid the movie Latter Days about a young Mormon who is gay and the way he is treated by the church. Rent it from Netflix.

A short story. speaking of answering the door, a guy in one of my classes at UAB showed us his gunshot wounds yesterday. Seems he was at home in his apartment on Southside, waiting for the Pizza guy. There was a knock at the door, he opened it and a man burst in with a 38. He stole a lot of stuff, then when he was leaving, he shot the guy in the leg. He has an entry wound and an exit wound mid thigh.

There will be men AND women on a mission around bessemer this weekend. Protests are being organized over the city council’s failure to pass the water bond issue and the possibility of a 108% rate increase. Look for Bessemer Neighborhood Association members at the Jess Lanier game tonight, handing out flyers, and watch for protesters at city hall and in the neighborhoods of council members Albert Soles, Dorothy Davidson, Sarah Belcher and Jesse Matthews leading up to Tuesday’s council meeting. Want to help? Go to Bessemer Neighbors to see what YOU can do. Also find council member’s phone numbers there so you can call them. This affects people in Bessemer, Midfield, Hueytown, Helena, Ross Bridge, Unincorporated Jefferson County and more.

A source tells me that Patrick Cooper and Larry Langford are leading by a long shot in early polling for Birmingham mayor’s race, each polling in the high 20’s. Smitherman is in third in the low teens and Kincaid is behind her. A lot can happen in the next few weeks.
